Have you completed a manuscript for a reality tv show? In addition to federal copyright protection, Secure Script Registration with the Writer’s Guild of America can help writers protect their manuscripts associated with radio, film, and TV. Through the Writer’s Guild of America, authors protect their works by establishing legal evidence of the completion date of their original work and their prior claim to authorship–useful aspects against infringers.
The Writer’s Guild of America is separated into two labor unions–Writer’s Guild of America, East (WGAE) and Writer’s Guild of America, West (WGAW). WGAE represents writers east of the Mississippi while WGAW represents writers in Hollywood and Southern California. Although the secure script registration is run by the WGAE and WGAW, authors do not have to be a members of either union to register material for a reality show. An author can register with either the WGAW or WGAE regardless of where he or she resides.
There are some factors to consider between registering with the two organizations. Although the registration fee with WGAW is cheaper, the length of registration with WGAW is only 5 years while the length of registration with the WGAE is 10 years–registration may be renewed. Another factor that should be considered is access to the work. Registered material with WGAW may not be withdrawn at any time, whereas registered material with the WGAE may be withdrawn but terminates the registration. Work submitted to the WGAE/WGAW should primarily be completed work and any additions or changes will likely require re-registration.
Protect your work. Secure script registration provides supplemental protection for your intellectual property and can be vital against any infringers who try to copy your work.
